Op-Ed: Downtown Revitalization

Does anybody remember the op-ed written by a former Sandusky resident which described numerous ways to create downtown development? The author gave about 15 examples/ways to develop the waterfront. I can't remember the author's name and no searches I've tried are turning up results in the Sandusky Register archives. Anybody remember his name or have the link to the article?

Update: Not a single person who reads this site can remember that op-ed? It was a detailed list of things that the city could do to bring business to downtown and revitalize the local economy. Nobody remembers it?

I remember this and I believe it was in a reader's forum in the SR. I thought I kept this and will search my files and also the SR archives.

Yeah, I think you're right about it being in the reader's forum. I tried every keyword I could think of but it was turning up nothing.

It was in the reader's forum. The guy that wrote it did not do his homework and had some ideas that in my opinion were pretty stinking poor. He thought one of the keys to saving downtown was to bring in a Starbucks. Keep in mind that Starbucks is cutting its number of stores, pays it employees less than $9 an hour, and is eliminating some of the benefits it is paying those employees. Do we want more employers like this in our city? He also thought that a Dave and Busters would help as well.... Yeah, just what we need more underpaying restaurants with horrible food.

Is it true some residence have started a petition to put the parking tax on the ballot?

I am not sure if you are referring to putting the parking meters back or some other parking tax. How do you monitor a tax on parking if you do not use meters. The owners of the lots can just fudge the amount of people parking in the lots and we do not have the manpower to oversee this. We used to have meters downtown and it kept the employees and owners from parking in spots that should be used for the public. The problem then was we did not have parking places for the owners or workers, now we do have the parking lots available.

I think you can find this reader's form letter at the Library in their SR archives. It is free, just takes some time to research.

A reader sent me the author's email address. But thanks anyway!

411, is there anyway we could get this article from him, we all would like to see this, since the SR doesn't seem to save these for people to research. Maybe because some of his suggestions made sense and we all know the SR is in bed with the pro Md people.

In regards to revitaliztion of downtown, Waddington has suggested that Warrent Street be a straight shot off of Route 6. Do you know what that means? It means that downtown traffic will be detoured to Warren and downton will never see this business traffic. Take a look at the design in the city chambers. Downtown will suffer if this new design is allowed to happen.

For years there has been periodic discussion about improving Warren Street to Sandusky Bay. Along comes the Marina Disaster Project and along comes another grand plan to widen and beautify the "Warren Street Corridor". And who pays for this while other important streets crumble???
